Academic Year 2022-23

The Centre for Health Sciences and Research (CHSR) hosted an enriching Workshop Series Session 1 on Saturday, April 2nd, 2022, via Google Meet. The session was focused on three critical topics: “Formulating a Research Question,” “CHSR Research Model and Ethics,” and “Importance of Research in Medicine.” Dr. Hemayle Syed, a distinguished Postdoctoral Research Fellow at Joslin Diabetes Centre, Harvard Medical School, and an alumnus of FMH, was the keynote speaker, offering valuable insights into these subjects. Dr. Nimra Ayaz, a respected moderator, played a vital role in facilitating the event’s discussions.

During the workshop, lively discussions ensued as attendees explored the intricacies of formulating research questions that drive meaningful inquiries. The CHSR research model and ethics became a focal point of conversation, with participants delving into the ethical considerations embedded in medical research.

The Workshop Series Session 1, led by Dr. Hemayle Syed and moderated by Dr. Numra Ayaz, proved to be a dynamic and successful gathering, fostering knowledge-sharing and collaboration within CHSR’s research community. This event exemplified CHSR’s commitment to promoting excellence in health sciences research and education.

In another insightful installment of the Workshop Series, Workshop Session 2 took place on April 23rd, 2022, via Zoom. This session was dedicated to the art of conducting literature reviews and mastering effective search strategies—a crucial skill set for any researcher. The session’s presenter, Dr.Minahil Fatima Chaudhry, an accomplished alumna of FMH who graduated with a BDS degree in 2019, currently pursues an MS in Oral Sciences in the USA. With her depth of knowledge and experience, Minahil delivered a comprehensive presentation on the intricacies of literature review and the strategies to navigate the vast sea of research materials effectively.

Dr.Nimra Ayaz, a respected figure within the CHSR community, served as the moderator, ensuring that the session flowed smoothly and facilitating engaging discussions among participants.

This Workshop Session 2 further solidified CHSR’s commitment to empowering its members with essential research skills. It provided attendees with valuable insights and practical techniques to excel in the realm of literature review and research, making it another successful event in CHSR’s workshop series.

On May 21st 2022, the Journal Club at Centre for Health Sciences Research (CHSR-FMH) held a discussion on the topic “Six-month neurological and psychiatric outcomes in COVID-19 survivors.”

Our discussants included Dr. Muhammad Aadil, M.D. psychiatry, Rutgers, New Jersey; and Dr. Syed Ahad Awais, psychiatry resident, BVH. The presenter for the session was Navaira Khalid, and the moderator was Dr. Nimra Ayaz.

Workshop Session 5, titled “Essentials of Scientific Writing,” held on July 2nd, 2022, via Zoom, was a significant addition to CHSR’s workshop series. This session focused on the critical skill of scientific writing, an indispensable aspect of research and academic work.

Dr. Mariam Tariq Awana, an accomplished alumna of FMH from the class of 2018, currently pursuing her PGY1 in Internal Medicine in the USA, led this informative session. Dr. Awana’s firsthand experience in both medical research and clinical practice made her a highly credible presenter. She shared insights into the nuances of scientific writing, including structuring research papers, selecting appropriate language and style, and adhering to ethical guidelines. During the session, participants had the opportunity to engage with Dr. Awana, asking questions and discussing common challenges faced in scientific writing. Practical tips and examples were provided to illustrate effective writing techniques, making the content both accessible and applicable.

Workshop Session 5 not only catered to the needs of MBBS students but also benefited the entire CHSR community. It portrayed CHSR as an organization dedicated to equipping its members with essential research and academic skills. By emphasizing the importance of clear and effective scientific writing, this session contributed to CHSR’s mission of promoting excellence in health sciences research and education.
