On Saturday, May 6th 2023, Center for Health Sciences Research (CHSR-FMH) hosted a USMLE career guidance webinar titled “From Applicants to Residents – Journey to Residency in the US.” The panelists included Dr Mariam T. Awana, Incoming PGY-1 IM/ Peds; Dr Muhammad Aadil, Psychiatry Fellow at Yale School of Medicine; and Dr Abbas H. Mallick, Incoming PGY-1 IM at Brooklyn Hospital Center, NYC. The session was moderated by Eeman Ahmad.
The panelists elaborated on all aspects of applying for residency in the US and what an applicant’s CV should include, sharing their own experiences and especially focusing on the USMLE – what one’s timeline should be and what resources one may use. Attendees showed up in good numbers and a Q&A session followed during which their questions were answered in detail.
The session received a positive response and CHSR hopes to continue to bring about more such discussions in the future.

On Sunday, August 27th 2023, the Journal Club under Center for Health Sciences Research (CHSR-FMH) had a virtual meeting to discuss the "Diabetes Prevalence Survey of Pakistan (DPS-PAK): prevalence of type 2 diabetes mellitus and prediabetes using HbA1c.” The discussant was Dr Hamayle Saeed, (Alumnus FMHCM) who is currently working as a Postdoctoral Research Fellow at the Joslin Diabetes Centre, Harvard Medical School, US, and the session was moderated by Eeman Ahmad.
The article was discussed in detail as a general background was provided before some light was shed on its methods, sample size, exclusion criteria, statistical analysis, results, highlights, and strengths.
We had a decent turnout as the audience was eager to learn more about this highly prevalent disease. Dr Hamayle Saeed took the time to answer all relevant questions and shared her own experiences as well, pertaining to the topic at hand.
The session was met with enthusiasm and the Journal Club looks forward to continuing with more such discussions in the future.

On Friday, September 29th 2023, Center for Health Sciences Research (CHSR-FMH) hosted the first session of Workshop Series 2.0, titled: “Basic Principles of Research.”
The presenters included Noorulain Saleem and Eeman Ahmad, as Noor took the lead with support and guidance from Eeman. The session was moderated by Mariyah Irfan.
The interactive session encompassed the basics of medical research as different types of articles were discussed. The attendees were provided with a complete road map for starting out in research.
The first workshop set a good tone for the remaining sessions that will be focusing in detail on specific types of research articles.
The session was met with enthusiasm and the Journal Club looks forward to continuing with more such discussions in the future.

On Sunday, October 1st 2023, the second workshop in CHSR’s Workshop Series 2.0 took place, titled: “Writing Letters to the Editor.”
The speaker for the session was FMH alumna Dr. Mariam Tariq Awana, PGY1 Internal Medicine, USA. The session was moderated by Mariyah Irfan.
Dr Mariam presented an instructive outline for LTEs (Letter to the Editor) and welcomed interactive discussion and questions from the attendees. The Q/A session proved highly beneficial as she answered all questions and resolved all queries.
The session ended with a satisfied audience and an anticipation for the next session in the series.

On Wednesday, October 4th 2023, the Journal Club at Centre for Health Sciences Research (CHSR-FMH) will be holding a discussion on an article published in the Lancet Journal of Psychiatry, titled: “Global, regional and national burden of 12 mental disorders in 204 countries and territories, 1990-2019; a systematic analysis.”
Our discussants will include FMHCMD Alumni Dr Muhammad Aadil, Outpatient Psychiatrist at Jacobi Medical Center NY [Addiction Psychiatry, Yale School of Medicine; Psychiatry Residency Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School] and Dr Aitzaz Munir, Assistant Professor Psychiatry at Rutgers-New Jersey Medical School, and Associate Program Director General of Psychiatry Residency Program & Addiction Psychiatry Fellowship at Rutgers NJMS.
The session will be moderated by Abdullah Sohail.

On Saturday, October 7th 2023, the third session of CHSR’s Workshop Series 2.0 will be taking place, titled: “The Art of Case Reports.”
The speaker for the session will be Dr Arsalan Nadeem, President & Founder of Radiological Students Association of Pakistan.
The session, as indicated by the title, will be focusing on how to write case reports and their importance in medical research.
CHSR hopes that the students, faculty, and alumni of FMH will attend the session with great zeal.

On Saturday, October 14th 2023, the last session of CHSR’s Workshop Series 2.0 will be taking place, titled: “Conducting your own Cross-sectional Studies.”
Cross-sectional studies are an exceedingly important part of health research for the determination of prevalence of health outcomes, understand determinants of health, and describe features of a population.
CHSR looks forward to ending its Workshop Series 2.0 on a strong note with enthusiastic participation from the FMH community.
